Houay Len Part 1: January to February

“ຜົວຕາຍໄດ້ 2 ປີນີ້ແລ້ວ, ຖ້າບໍ່ມີລູກຫຼາຍຄົນແມ່ນຂ້າຕົວຕາຍແລ້ວເພາະວ່າທຸກຍາກຈິດໃຈຫຼາຍ ແຕ່ກໍ່ຍ້ອນມີລູກຫຼາຍຄົນຈື່ງອົດຢູ່ຕໍ່.   ຄິດແນວໃດກໍ່ບໍອອກສະນັ້ນ ສົ່ງລູກຊາຍໄປເປັນກໍາມະກອນ, ເພາະວ່າບໍ່ຮູ້ຈະຫາເງີນສົ່ງນ້ອງໄປຮຽນໜັງສືແນວໃດ, ຖ້າລາວບໍ່ໄປເຮັດແນວນັ້ນແມ່ນລູກສາວກໍຊີໄດ້ອອກໂຮງຮຽນ ເພາະວ່າບໍ່ມີເງີນຊື້ບິກ, ຊື້ປື້ມ ແລະ ຊື້ເຄື່ຶອງນຸ່ງ.”

“My husband died two years ago. If I didn’t have so many children I would have killed myself because it is so hard. I didn’t know what to do, so I sent my son to work as a laborer. I didn’t know how else to get money to send my daughter to school. If he hadn’t done that, then my daughter would have had to drop out of school because I wouldn’t have had money to buy pens, books and clothes.”

In this episode the women of Houay Len tell about their daily tasks and also recount the events of a cold spell that the villagers encounter earlier in the year.

 


Na Uoo Part 1: January to February

ບ້ານ ນາອູ່ເປັນບ້ານຊົນເຜົ່າພວນເຊີ່ງຂື້ນກັບເມືອງຄູນ ແຂວງ ຊຽງຂວາງ. ປະຊາຊົນແມ່ນມີອາຊີບຜະລິດເສັ້ນເຟີເປັນສີນຄ້າ ແລະ ຍັງເປັນບ້ານ ທີ່ຜະລິດເສັ້ນເຟີຫລາຍທີ່ສຸດໃນແຂວງ ຊຽງຊວາງນໍາອີກ. ຊົນເຜົ່າພວນແມ່ນປະຕິບັດຕາມຮີດຄອງປະເພນີເຊ່ັນດຽວຊົນເຜົ່າລາວລຸ່ມເຊັ່ນ: ບຸນພະເວດ.”

ໃນຕອນນີ້ ປະຊາຊົນໃນບ້ານນາອູ່ ໄດ້ກະກຽມ ແລະສະຫຼອງບຸນພະເວດ ນອກຈາກນັ້ນແລ້ວ ເຮົາຍັງໄດ້ຮຽນຮູ້ກ່ຽວກັບກຸ່ມຜະລິດເສັ້ນເຝີຢູ່ບ້ານນາອູ່.

“Na Uoo is an ethnic Phouan village situated in Khoun district of Xieng Khouang province. The villagers of Na Uoo earn living by making Pho noodles. Na Uoo is the biggest noodle producer in the province. The Phouan ethnic group practices the same tradition as Lao Loum such as the Phavet festival.”

In this episode the villagers of Na Uoo prepare and celebrate Phavet festival while we also learn about noodle production group.


Sandonkor Part 1: January to February

“The cold weather made everything freeze and the snow killed trees and vegetables. When we went to collect water, it was so cold. As for the livestock, many died. Some families lost 2-3 of their cattle while others lost 7-8 of their cattle. The children couldn’t go to school because they did not have enough warm clothes. Now we don’t dare to go to the forest because we are afraid that the dead branches will fall on us. We had never seen snow before, this was the first time we saw it with our own eyes.”

In this episode the villagers of Sandonkor talk about their daily lives and also recount the events of a cold spell that the villagers encounter earlier in the year.


Houay Len Part 2: April to August

 

“ລູກຊາຍກັບມາໃນຊ່່ວງເດືອນສິງຫາ ແລະ ລາວກໍ່ຊ່ວຍຫາກິນຫາຢູ່ໃຫ້ຄອບຄົວ ເພາະລາວເປັນຜູ້ຊາຍຄົນດຽວໃນຄອບຄົວ, ລາວກໍ່ໄປຍິງໂຕຫໍ້ກໍ່ໄດ້ກີນ, ມື້ນີ້ກໍ່ໄດ້ໂຕໜູ 2-3 ໂຕ, ມື້ວານນີ້ກໍ່ໄດ້ໂຕຫໍ້ໂຕໜຶ່ງ, ຕອນນີ້ລາວກັບມາກໍ່ໄດ້ກີນຊີ້ນ, ຕອນນັ້ນມີແຕ່ລູກສາວຢູ່ ມີແຕ່ກີນຜັກ, ກີນໜໍ່ ທຸກໆຄາບເຮັດໃຫ້ເຮົາເບື່ອໜໍ່ຫຼາຍ.”

“My son returned [from working as a laborer] in August and helps to find food for the family. Because he is the only male in the family, he hunts for squirrels. Today he caught 2-3 rats, yesterday he got a squirrel. When he is at home we get to eat meat. When there’s only my daughter, she collects vegetables only. I’m sick of eating bamboo shoots. We eat them nearly every day and at every meal.”

In this episode the women of Houay Len talk about nutrition and about preparing their fields, planting, and growing upland rice and maize. The episode also takes a look at the prevalent pesticide usage and its impact on the villagers.


Na Uoo Part 2: April to August

 

“ຍາມຝົນແມ່ນເຮັດເຝີມີຄວາມຸຫຍຸ້ງຍາກຫຼາຍ ເຮົາບໍ່ໄດ້ເອົາອອກຕາກແດດ ບາງເທື່ອເຮົາກໍ່ໄດ້ຂາງເອົາ ຂາງເຝີແມ່ນໃຊ້ເວລາດົນ ແຕ່ວ່າຕາກແດດແມ່ນໃຊ້ເວລາໜ້ອຍ ແລະກໍ່ແຊບກ່ວາ ຖ້າວ່າຂາງ ແລະຄວັນອອກຖືກ ມັນກໍ່ໍ່ບໍ່ແຊບ”.

ໃນຕອນນີ້ ແມ່ຍິງໃນບ້ານນາອູ່ໄດ້ເລົ່າໃຫ້ຟັງກ່ຽວກັບການກະກຽມເຮັດນາ, ການຕົກກ້າ ໂດຍສືບຕໍ່ຜະລິດເສັ້ນເຝີ ເຖິງແມ່ນວ່າຈະພົບອຸປະສັກຈາກໜ້າຝົນກໍ່ຕາມ.

“In the rainy season it is very difficult to produce noodles because there is no sun to dry the noodles. Sometimes I need to dry the noodles over a charcoal fire. It takes a long time. Drying them in the sunlight takes much less time and they come out tastier.”

In this episode the women of Na Uoo talk about preparing their fields and planting rice seedlings while also continuing to produce noodles regardless of the challenges imposed by the rainy season.


Sandonkor Part 2: April to August

 

“ຂ້ອຍສີດຢາໄດ້ 3 ປີນີ້ແລ້ວ, ສໍາລັບວິທີປ້ອງກັນນັ້ນເຮົາກໍ່ເຫັນເຂົາໄດ້ເຫັນ ແລະ ໄດ້ຍິນເຂົາເຈົ້າເວົ້າ ແຕ່ຍ້ອນວ່າມັນຮ້ອນເຮົາສີດຢາເປັນອາທິດ ແລະມັນຮ້ອນຫຼາຍ ເຮົາຈຶ່ງບໍ່ໃສ່ຜ້າອັດປາກ ນໍ້າຢາຈຶ່ງຖືກເຮົາເຮັດໃຫ້ເຮັດໃຫ້ຂ້ອຍເມົາຢາ. ນໍ້າຢາແມ່ນຄີວຫຼາຍ ເຮັດໃຫ້ເຮົາວີນຫົວ ແລະປວດຮາກ.”

“I have been spraying [pesticides] for at least three years. I’ve heard about how to protect myself. Spraying is very tiring because I have to spray nearly one week. It’s so hot so I remove the cloth from my mouth and sometimes the spray gets in my mouth. It makes me sick. I get a headache and I feel nauseous.”

In this episode the women of Sandonkor talk about preparing their fields, planting and growing rice and maize. The episode also explores why the villagers use pesticide what they know about health threats.


Houay Len Part 3: September to December

 

“ປີກາຍນີ້ໄດ້ເຂົ້າ 50 ເປົາ ປີນີ້ໄດ້ບໍ່ກາຍ 30-40 ເປົາ ເພາະວ່າຢູ່ໃນຊ່ວງເດືອນສິງຫາ(8) ມີໄພແຫ້ງແລ້ງຕາຍໝົດ ກົກມັນຕາຍເພາະວ່າເຮົາເຮັດໄຮ່ເກົ່າ ບໍ່ໄດ້ຖາງປ່າໃໝ່ຄືຄອບຄົວອື່ນໆ, ເຮົາບໍ່ມີຜູ້ຊາຍຖາງຈື່ງເຮັດໄຮ່ເກົ່າ ຢ້ານຮອດເດືອນມິຖຸນາ(6) ຊີໄດ້ຊື້ເຂົ້າກິນແລ້ວ.”

ໃນຕອນນີ້ ແມ່ຍິງໃນບ້ານຫ້ວຍແລນ ໄດ້ເລົ່າໃຫ້ຟັງກ່ຽວກັບຂັ້ນຕອນກ່ອນ ແລະຫຼັງການເກັບກ່ຽວລວມເຖິງຮີດຄອງທີ່ພວກເຂົາໄດ້ປະຕິບັດຕາມ.

“Last year I got 50 sacks. This year I will probably only get 30-40 sacks. There was a drought in August and a lot of the rice died because I planted it on an old field. I didn’t clear a new field like the other families did because my son was away. I am afraid that in June next year I will have to buy rice because we won’t have enough rice to eat. I don’t have any money, so I don’t know what I’m going to do to get money to buy rice. “

In this episode the women of Houay Len tell about different tasks related to harvesting. They also talk about the ceremonies that are held prior to and after threshing the rice.


Na Uoo Part 3: September to December

 

“ກ່ຽວໄດ້ມຶື້ 1-2 ມື້ກໍພົບຄວາມຫຍຸ້ງຍາກ ຝົນຕົກແຮງ ແລະ ນ້ຳກໍມາຖ້ວມປະມານ 4-5 ຕາແມັດເສຍຫາຍຢ່າງຫຼວງຫຼາຍ ແລະ ນາຍບ້ານໂພນກໍມາບອກຊາວບ້ານໄປຊ່ວຍ 10ປາຍຄົນໄປກູ້ເອົາເຂົ້າໄຫຼນ້ຳເອົາມາລ້າງ ແລະ ກໍມາຕາກແດດໄດ້ 3 – 4 ມື້, ແລ້ວກໍໄດ້ໄປມັດກໍແມ່ນເສຍຫາຍຫຼາຍສົມຄວນ ບໍ່ໄດ້ທໍ່ເກົ່າ.

ໃນຕອນນິ້ ແມ່ນລະດູການເກັບກ່ຽວ ແມ່ຍິງໃນບ້ານນາອູ່ ໄດ້ເລົ່າໃຫ້ຟັງກ່ຽວກັບຜົນກະທົບຈາກນໍ້າຖ້ວມຕໍ່ການເກັບກ່ຽວເຂົາເຈົ້າ.

“During the first two days of the harvesting, we were faced with many problems caused by the heavy rains and there was around 4000-5000 m2 area that got flooded. The village head sent about 10 people to come help us and to collect and wash the harvested rice that had washed away. We let it dry out for 3-4 days before we bundled it. There was quite a lot of damage, so this year we didn’t get as much as rice as we have in the past.”

In this episode the women of Na Uoo talk about harvesting and and the arrangements that are put in place to ensure that there is enough noodles to supply to their customers during this period.


Sandonkor Part 3: September to December

 

“ອາຫານການກິນ ແມ່ນເກັບໝາກເຂືອ ແລະ ຜັກກາດຂຽວ ທີ່ປູກຢູ່ໄຮ່ມາກິນ. ສຳລັບຜົວແມ່ນຂັບລົດຈັກເປັນ, ສະນັ້ນລາວຕ້ອງເປັນຜູ້ໄປອອກຕະຫຼາດຊື້ຊີ້ນ ມາກິນ. ສ່ວນໜ້າທີ່ຂ້ອຍແມ່ນເກັບຜັກທີ່ປູກຢູ່ເຮືອນມາກິນ.”

ໃນຕອນນີ້ ແມ່ຍິງບ້ານສັນໂດນກໍ ໄດ້ເລົ່າໃຫ້ຟັງກ່ຽວກັບໜ້າວຽກຕ່າງໆທີ່ກ່ຽວພັນກັບການເກັບກ່ຽວເຂົ້າ ແລະ ການເກັບຮັກສາຜົນລະປູກ.

“I eat food that I can find in the field. I plant eggplants and green cabbage
there so that I can collect it to eat. My husband knows how to ride a motorbike so he is the one who has to go to the market to buy meat, while collecting the cabbage is my task.”
