Watch Villagers of Na Uoo Deal with Floods during Harvest Season

“During the first two days of the harvesting, we were faced with many problems caused by the heavy rains and there was a 4000-5000 m2  area that got flooded.  The village head sent about 10 people to come help us and to collect and wash the harvested rice that had washed away. We let it dry out for 3-4 days before we bundled it. There was quite a lot of damage, so this year we didn’t get as much as rice as we have in the past.”

This video is Part 3 of the 3-part series that covers the lives of the villagers in Na Uoo over a one-year period. This second video explores the lives of three Lao Loum (lowland Lao) women, Aunt Tui, Mrs. Phone and Mrs. Thongkham, during the harvesting season from October to November. This year the villagers’ initial attempts to harvest were hampered by heavy rains and flooding during the first few days of the harvesting season. In the video, the women tell us how they tried to mitigate the damage and how the weather affected their total yields. The change of season also meant that the women who stopped producing noodles during the rainy season have started producing noodles again and they are dividing their time again between the work in the fields and the work at home producing noodles.
