buaMrs. Bua, 45
Mrs. Bua lives with her husband, son, and a daughter-in-law. The family’s main source of income is growing upland rice and maize, but Mrs. Bua gains additional income by weaving and collecting forest products.

Mrs. Tong, wife of the village head, 28
Mrs. Tong’s family consists of her husband, two sons, a daughter and parents in law. The family’s main source of income is growing upland rice and maize. Mrs. Tong initiated weaving in the village and she earns extra income by selling the sins (traditional lao skirts) woven by women in her village at the Kham district market. She also buys forest products from women in her village on a daily basis and sells them to traders whenever they come to visit the village.

chuengMrs. Chueng, widow, 48
Mrs. Chueng is a widow who lives with her son and four daughters. The family’s main source of income comes from growing upland rice and maize. Mrs. Chueng also collects forest products for additional income and her eldest daughter has recently learned to weave sins that she sells for extra income. After her husband died, her son has been working away from home off and on as a laborer and earning money for the family to ensure that the three younger daughters can stay in school. When the son is away, there is no male member in the family who can hunt for food and the family has to subsist on rice and the vegetables they grow and collect from the forest.

 

Na Uoo Village

Mrs. Tui, or Aunt Tui as she is often called, lives with her husband, son and daughter-in-law. Her two daughters are living in Xaisomboun and only visit once in a while. Aunt Tui earns income by producing Pho noodles for sale. She’s also taught women in her village to make noodles, and over time the Na Uoo noodles have become a famous product of Xieng Khouang province.

Mrs. Phone lives with her husband and two daughters. The family grows rice for their own consumption and earns income by producing Pho noodles all year around.

Mrs Thongkham lives with her three sons and mother-in-law. The family’s main sources of income come from growing rice and producing noodles. Mrs. Thongkham stops producing noodles during the rainy season but continues again after the rains subside.

 

Sandonkor Village

The family’s main sources of income are growing upland rice and raising cattle. In additions, Youa’s husband runs a small retail stall in front of their house.

 

DierMrs. Dier, 56
Mrs. Dier lives with her husband, son, and daughter-in-law. Her two sons and a daughter have moved to Phonesavanh. The family has been selected by other villagers as a “model family”. The title is given to a family in which the husband and wife get along well and help each other with work. The family’s earns its income from growing upland rice and raising cattle.

maiyengMrs. Maiyeng, widow, 54
Mrs. Maiyeng is the head of her household. She lives with her two sons, but she also has a married daughter who lives with her husband’s family. The family’s main source of income comes from growing upland rice, but Mrs. Maiyeng also earns extra income by working as a day laborer in other people’s fields.
